How Long Does It Take to Learn German?
This is one of the most common questions we get. Learning a new language requires time and dedication. Especially when it comes to the German language, many wonder, “How long does it really take?”
What language level are you aiming for?
There’s a clear difference between wanting to get by while shopping or being able to fluently discuss complex topics. A few months might be enough for everyday conversations. However, to speak almost accent-free and without grammatical mistakes can take years.
What does the learning process look like?
Initially, progress can be rapid. Short, simple conversations and daily activities can soon be managed in German. But the deeper you dive and the more complex the content, the more time and practice is needed.
What do the different levels mean?
If you’re learning German, you’ll come across terms like A1 or C1. But what do these mean? Here’s a quick overview:
Beginner: A1
A1 is the starting point for beginners without prior knowledge. After this course, you can use between 500 and 1000 words and form simple sentences.
Basic knowledge: A2
A2 builds on A1. It strengthens grammar and vocabulary and often serves as a stepping stone to B1.
Advanced basic knowledge: B1
With B1, you can communicate in everyday life and work, even if minor mistakes still occur. It’s a target for many integration courses.
Advanced: B2 & C1
B2 provides a solid foundation for professional communication. C1 enables fluent German and opens doors to higher education and specialist professions.

How long does it take to achieve a certain level?
Learning German does not happen overnight. But how long does it take to feel confident at a certain level? Here’s a guide for you:
Basic German skills: A1 & A2
On average, you should plan about 12 weeks for each level, assuming you attend 1 to 3 hours of lessons daily. However, A1 and A2 could be mastered in up to 8 weeks with intensive study. Regular repetition is important to strengthen what you’ve learned.
Advanced German skills: B1
An integration course targeting B1 typically schedules 600 lessons of 45 minutes each over a period of 6 months.
Higher levels: B1 to C1
For more ambitious goals like B1 to C1, plan 9-12 months. With prior knowledge, this could be reduced to 3 to 6 months.
Remember: Everyone learns at their own pace. What’s crucial is the passion and dedication you put into your learning process!
Are weekend or evening courses a good option?
For those who do not have so much time, we also offer evening and weekend courses. However, keep in mind that it may take longer to reach a certain level in these courses due to the lower frequency of classes.
A tip for employers
If you have employees with insufficient German skills, it might be helpful to give them a few hours of free time. An intensive course lasting one or two months can work wonders.
